The EU ambassador and the president of the Institute of Access to Public Information (IAIP) of El Salvador staged the strategic alliance on public policy for social cohesion
Promoting transparency and access to information is one of El Salvador’s priorities to reduce corruption, achieve greater citizen participation and promote social control over public management. It is also a key entitlement to access other rights.
Since 2013, EUROsociAL + has been strengthening the Institute of Access to Public Information (IAPI), the entity responsible for guaranteeing this crucial right to Salvadoran citizens. IAIP is now six years old and wants to acknowledge the European Union’s regional programme of technical cooperation, its guidance and technical support in promoting a culture of transparency and access to public information. President of the IAIP, Commissioner Carlos Ortega, and the ambassador of the EU in El Salvador, Andreu Bassols, staged this strategic alliance.
EUROsociAL+ backing has included promoting a new technical standard to improve the management and protection of data from clinical files by the health system, strengthening control strategies, inclusion and development of this in the education system, preparation of document management guidelines for municipalities and the creation of a model to incorporate the gender approach in their strategies. In 2019 two new actions are being launched, aimed at improving municipal transparency and access to information for vulnerable groups.
The IAIP stands out for its ability to optimise cooperation resources, for its excellent command of the processes of change and for the enormous technical quality and commitment of its teams. Although it is still a young organisation, all this makes it a leading guarantor institution when it comes to the right to access public information in Latin America.
