Federal construction of a regulatory framework for old people’s homes in Argentina

The Inter-ministerial and Federal Committee of Argentina defined the standards of care for old people’s homes, with the support of the Social Policies Area of EUROsociAL+ in IILA.

In Argentina, as in other countries, the pandemic has revealed the huge diversity of realities in which older people who live in residences find themselves. Due to the country’s own organisation, each province has produced its own regulations in relation to residences. This condition has resulted in a highly complex map in terms of the requirements requested for authorisations, the areas and ministries involved in this issue and the social and health services provided by these establishments, which is detrimental to guaranteeing equal rights for this population.

The Federal Committee, arising from joint work performed by the Ministry of Health Intra-ministerial and Federal Committee and the Ministry of Social Development’s National Directorate for Older Adults (DINAPAM) has, over the last few months, been working on the federal construction of a Regulatory Framework for Old People’s Homes with the support of the European Union Programme EUROsociAL+.

During the meeting, Lourdes Bermejo, EUROsociAL+ expert, shared her reflections on the support and quality of life in homes for the dependent elderly, as well as commenting on the main guidelines to be considered in the construction of quality standards that can be extended to the entire country. Planned in this creation process is the incorporation of the voice of the elderly and different social actors too.
