Supporting the Peruvian Ministry of the Interior in preventing, addressing and punishing sexual harassment in the police

The European Union in Peru and the EUROsociAL+ Programme, through its Gender Equality Policies Area with Expertise France, have signed an institutional commitment with the Ministry of the Interior to initiate this action, which forms part of the Peruvian Police’s strengthening and modernisation process.

The Ministry of the Interior (Mininter) and the European Union’s (EU) EUROsociAL+ Programme signed the inter-institutional commitment for the creation of the mechanism to follow-up and monitor sexual harassment within the Peruvian national police service.

This technical assistance is part of the initiatives promoted by the Ministry of the Interior to foster the process of strengthening and modernising our police, incorporating the gender perspective in public policies to eradicate any form of violence and discrimination against women.

Taking part in the signing were the Minister of the Interior, José Elice; the EU’s Ambassador in the country, Diego Mellado, the Director of the EU’s EUROsociAL Programme, Juan Manuel Santomé Calleja; the General Commander of the Peruvian national police service, General César Cervantes, among other authorities and representatives from the European Union Delegation in Peru and EUROsociAL+.

In a joint effort between the Police Ombudsman’s Office and the MININTER Commissioner for the Fight Against Violence against Women, the inter-institutional commitment was signed that ratifies the commitment to fight against sexual harassment within the police.

Through this commitment, EUROsociAL+ will provide the Ministry of the Interior with technical assistance in implementing the measures and mechanisms aimed at eliminating discrimination and violence against women within the PNP, with the aim of integrating in the proposal’s formulation, best practices and lessons learned from similar experiences in international police forces and security forces.

EUROsociAL+ is a cooperation programme between Latin America and the EU, which seeks to contribute to improving social cohesion in Latin American countries, as well as to institutional strengthening with support for their processes to design, reform and implement public policies.

Also participating in this signing were the EUROsociAL+ Gender Equality Technician in Expertise France, Sandra Berthelot; the PNP Director of Citizen Security, General Aldo Muñoz; the General Director of the Police Ombudsman’s Office, Fabiola Baca and MININTER’s Commissioner for the Fight against Violence against Women, María Pía Molero.
