EUROsociAL+ gathered seven Latin American countries and EU representatives in Lima to coordinate national and regional perspectives with equality and gender equity plans
EUROsociAL+ organised the first regional work meeting on national gender equality plans, entitled “Gender Equality Policies. Experiences in Latin America: progress and challenges” in Lima, Peru. The opening session was attended by the Deputy Minister for Women and Vulnerable Populations, Cecilia Aldave Ruiz, and Stefaan Pauwels, chief of cooperation of the Delegation of the European Union to Peru.
The meeting was an opportunity to share Latin America’s “voice” through gender equality and equity plans and policies and to consolidate coordination between regional and country visions, identifying synergies with other initiatives and spaces for intersectoral work.
The workshop took place over two days. Firstly, the national gender equality plans of the seven participating Latin American countries (Argentina, Costa Rica, Ecuador, Mexico, Paraguay, Peru and Uruguay) were presented, with France contributing a European Union perspective. These panels shared the achievements and difficulties of the plans in each country.
The second stage of the workshop consisted of organising group workshops to address all stages of the process: designing, drafting, implementing, monitoring and evaluating equality plans, by all the representatives from institutions and civil society and international experts in attendance.
The representative of the Gender Equality policy area of EUROsociAL+ in Expertise France said that this work will continue with activities that specifically address each stage of the process of a national gender equality plan, depending on the degree of progress made by each Latin American country with this action programme. The purpose is to create a work network to guide each country through each stage of the programme and share best practices and problems.
Lastly, coinciding with this activity, the Peruvian Cabinet announced the approval of the National Gender Equality Policy, which was supported by EUROsociAL+.
