On 23 November 2017, the Congress of the Argentine Nation approved the Law of Gender Parity in Spheres of Political Representation. This Law represents a milestone in the Argentine parity movement that began in the 2000s when the provinces of Santiago del Estero, Córdoba and Río Negro adopted provincial laws. The parity was the result of the work of many policies of all parties, women in academia and in civil society. Currently, Argentina not only has a national parity law, but also laws of this type in 21 of its 24 provinces. The adoption of these laws at the national and provincial level represents another step in the furthering of democracy in the country, specifically in the political inclusion of women.
Four years after the approval of the Law and within the framework of the gender equality policy agenda, the Honourable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation, the Ministry of the Interior and EUROsociAL+ have organised the international “Parity Democracy and Political Representation of the women” seminar. This meeting aims to reflect on the challenges in building a parity democracy in Argentina and in the region.
This debate is part of the actions implemented by EUROsociAL+ in support of the action fiche “Strengthening Parity Democracy and the political representation of women in Argentina from the Executive and Legislative Power” prepared by the Ministry of the Interior and the Honourable Chamber of Deputies of the Argentine Nation.
