SAN JOSÉ, COSTA RICA, WILL HOST THE FIRST ANNUAL MEETING OF THE EUROsociAL+ PROGRAMME

As has become a tradition in the earlier phases of EUROsociAL, the space for face-to-face exchange between Europe and Latin America, with social cohesion as the backbone of the bi-regional dialogue, will be provided again this year. In this edition, the Sustainable Development Goals and the role of the social agenda in the current Latin American scenario are being added as starting points for the debate. San José, Costa Rica, takes the baton from Madrid, Antigua (Guatemala), Lima, Brussels and Salvador de Bahía as cities where EUROsociAL puts faces on the ongoing dialogue between countries, institutions and companies in the two regions.

DEMOCRATIC GOVERNANCE ON THE RADIO

EUROsociAL will return to the airwaves with a programme dedicated to the work the programme is doing in the area of democratic governance in its different facets: regional development, access to justice, public finances and transparency and anti-corruption. Here is a preview of the content: “The value of this cooperation can be summed up in two words: decentralised cooperation, with the various governments of each country. We need to find people on the ground who have day-to-day responsibility for improving the living conditions of the population", explains Ronald Hall, chief adviser to the Directorate-General for Regional and Urban Policy of the European Commission. “State institutions are key for formulating policies in the areas of development, equity, poverty-reduction, social and economic affairs, among others, and that requires solid institutions”.
